“Do we fix what we have, or start over?” is one of the most common questions a Westborough business owner asks once their website starts feeling like a liability instead of an asset. It’s a fair question — and the answer depends on less than you’d think.

Here’s the framework we actually use with clients, followed by where a full rebuild — including our flat-fee $1,500 build — tends to make more sense than another round of patches.

When a redesign is the right call

A redesign — updating the look, content, and structure on your existing platform — makes sense when the underlying foundation is still sound. If your site runs on a current, well-supported theme, loads reasonably fast, and the core structure just feels dated or disorganized, a redesign gets you a fresh look without throwing away working infrastructure.

Signs a redesign is enough:

  • The site loads acceptably fast on mobile
  • Plugins and theme are current and actively supported
  • You just need updated content, photos, and a visual refresh

When a full rebuild is actually cheaper

A rebuild makes more financial sense once the platform itself is the problem — an abandoned page builder, a theme nobody maintains anymore, or a site so patched together that every change risks breaking something else. In those cases, a redesign is really just a more expensive rebuild with extra steps, because you’re paying a developer to work around a broken foundation instead of starting clean.

This is where our $1,500 custom WordPress build tends to come up. It’s a flat-fee, roughly two-week rebuild — not a template with your logo swapped in — designed specifically for the small businesses that have outgrown a patched-together site but don’t need (or want to pay for) a five-figure agency project.

A simple way to decide

Ask two questions. First: has a developer ever told you “we can’t easily change that without breaking something else”? Second: is your site built on a platform, builder, or theme that’s been discontinued or rarely updated? A yes to either one usually means a rebuild will cost you less over the next two years than continuing to patch — even though the sticker price feels bigger up front.

If you answered no to both, a redesign on your current foundation — paired with an ongoing care plan to keep it from drifting back into disrepair — is likely the more efficient path for a Westborough business.

Isn’t a redesign always cheaper than a full rebuild?

Not always. If the underlying platform is the problem, a redesign often costs more in developer hours working around limitations than a clean rebuild would — you end up paying twice, once for the redesign and again later for the eventual rebuild.

How do I know if my current platform is actually a problem?

The clearest sign is a developer telling you a simple request isn’t simple to make. Another is checking whether your page builder or theme has had an update in the last year — if not, you’re building on ground that’s slowly sinking.

What does the $1,500 build actually include?

A custom-built WordPress site — not a pre-made template — typically covering your home page, service pages, and a way to capture leads, delivered in about two weeks. It’s built to be handed off cleanly and optionally supported afterward with an ongoing care plan.

Can I start with a redesign and rebuild later if needed?

You can, but it’s worth going in with eyes open — if the platform issue was the real cause of your problems, a redesign will likely feel like a temporary fix rather than a solution, and you’ll be back at this decision sooner than you’d like.

5 Things to Ask Before Paying for a Westborough Website Redesign

A redesign quote can range from a few hundred dollars to five figures for what sounds like the same project.
