Running a WordPress site yourself is completely doable — until life gets busy and maintenance quietly stops happening. Here are the five tasks that get skipped most often, and why they matter more than they seem.

1. Backups — actually verified, not just “set up”

Many site owners set up automatic backups once and never check them again. A backup plugin that silently fails for six months is worse than no backup at all, because it gives false confidence. Check that a recent, restorable backup actually exists.

2. Plugin and theme updates

It’s tempting to click “remind me later” on update notifications indefinitely. But outdated plugins are the single most common way small business sites get hacked. Updates should happen on a schedule, not “whenever I remember.”

3. Uptime monitoring

If your site goes down at 2am on a Saturday, will you know before a customer tells you? Free uptime monitoring tools exist, but most business owners never set one up — which means outages can go unnoticed for hours or days.

4. Checking for broken links

Over time, links to old pages, partners, or resources quietly break. Broken links hurt both user experience and how search engines evaluate your site’s quality. A quarterly link check catches this before it piles up.

5. Reviewing site speed after adding content or plugins

Every new plugin or large image you add has the potential to slow your site down. Most owners never test speed after making changes, so slowdowns creep in unnoticed over months.

How much time does WordPress maintenance actually take each month?

Done properly — backups, updates, and a security scan — it’s typically 1-2 hours a month for a straightforward business site. The challenge isn’t the time itself, it’s remembering to do it consistently.

What happens if I just never do any of this?

Nothing, until something does. Sites without maintenance tend to run fine for a surprisingly long time, right up until a plugin conflict breaks the site, a security gap gets exploited, or performance degrades enough to notice in traffic and leads.

Can I do all of this myself for free?

Yes, largely. The tools exist and much of this is genuinely doable without technical expertise. The tradeoff is consistency — most owners who go this route find the tasks slip after a few months once things get busy.

If this list feels like more than you want to own yourself, our care plan handles all five of these every month — so it’s simply done, not something on your to-do list.
